We wish to highlight here that question raised by Mr. Mishra( from NIT
Rourkela) is very right and we wish to answer that and the same would also
give more clarity to Mr. Sunil's (from Informatics) comment on the topic.
Middleware is an item in RFID project which can really provide you with
full benefit of NCIPV2.0 /SIP2 protocols. It is not important to debate
whether middleware is require or not but whether middleware provided by the
vendor would be able to integrate with third party hardware or not. In
today's business world vendors are running to lock clients by providing
them non standard solutions and hence freedom of choice is lost. Middleware
is actually the platform where SIP2/NCIP are installed which in turn
provides number of features as listed by Mr. Mishra.
To set high standards of solution delivery focusing on client satisfaction
and freedom of choice, RapidRadio have integrated RFID hardware from
three OEM (RapidRadio, Tagsys & Feig) for British Council Library and show
similar openness to any of our current clients where third party hardware
is required to be integrated. We strongly feel clients can be retained by
providing them satisfactory support and not by forcing them to stick to a
current vendor & solution using non standard delivery or direct integration
methods.

Dear Mr. Sunil,
Please explain " Koha - only need to be activated" . Do you mean that once SIP2 is enabled and just plug the RFID device in the machine it will start working? without any middle ware for tagging, charging, discharging tasks etc.?

Primarily many of the software vendors charge extra for the SIP2 protocol whereas in Koha SIP2/NCIP protocol is inbuilt and need to be activated. In some cases vendors do charge libraries based on the collections, as the collection increases the cost of the SIP2/NCIP protocols also increase.
Some company provides middleware application for the integration of RFID and library management software, which is wrong way to do as in future if library management software upgrade; these middleware application is not able support the RFID and upgraded library management software.
Following are the library management software which support RFID.
Koha - only need to be activated Virtua - charges extra for the SIP2 protocol and Middleware application Autolib - charges extra for the SIP2 protocol LibSys - charges extra for the SIP2 protocol Alice for Windows And many more...
We have done implementation of Koha on cloud as well as onsite installation and provide support on the RFID solutions.
