KOLHAPUR: Nisarg Mitra, a city-based non-governmental organization (NGO), has started a 'library on wheels' campaign to inculcate the habit of reading science-related books among schoolchildren. The NGO will not only involve schools but also students, parents and school going autrickshaws. Since last week, around 40 autorickshaw drivers were approached to participate in this campaign. Over 70 schools in the city and adjoining areas have also been requested to be a part of the campaign. The aim is to create awareness about the environment, health and science among the school kids below 14 years of age. The NGO has received a good response to the campaign so far. Anil Chougule, the coordinator of Nisarg Mitra, said, "Our aim is to promote the habit of reading science among children. We have approached schools and are also involving autorickshaw drivers ferrying schoolchildren. We requested drivers to find out how many children in their rickshaws are interested in reading books during the commute to school. We received a response from 40 drivers, after which we distributed a set of 10 books to each rickshaw for 15 days without any rent." The NGO has requested schools to select 10 children, who want to read books related to the environment and science. It received a response from 50 city-based schools and 20 schools from the adjoining areas. "We have distributed a set of books to these schools. Along with the books, we also distributed a questionnaire for the children. They can also who participate in a residence camp for science awareness by solving a question paper. The winning 30 students can attend the camp," Chougule said. The basic concept of the NGO is to create awareness about environment, health and science among the school-going kids of age group below 14 years. It has requested the school-rickshaw drivers in the city, to help them reach the children and has received a good response so far. "Our idea was to enhance science reading habit in the children. We are working on the two fronts. At one end, we are involving autorickshaw drivers who transport school children and secondly we have approached schools. We requested drivers to find out how many children in their rickshaws are interested to read books during travel to school. We have received response from 40 drivers and then we distributed a set of 10 books to each rickshaw for 15 days without any rent," said Anil Chougule, coordinator of Nisarg Mitra. The NGO also approached schools and requested them to select 10 children from the premises who want to read books related to environment and science, resulting in response from 50 city-based schools and 20 schools from the adjoined areas. "We have distributed same set of books to the schools. Along with the books, we have also distributed a questionnaire to the children. After book reading those who want to participate in a residence camp for science awareness, will be asked to solve the paper. Winning 30 student entries will be entitled to the camp," Chougule added. Nisarg Mitra has started the drive to celebrate science month and targeting to reach over 700 children to promote the science. The books were selected by the experts and the questionnaire was prepared by the three science teachers.
