Dear Professional, Mysore Librarians and Information Scientists Association (R) (MyLISA) organized a workshop on �Interview and Interviewing Skills� on May 14, 2005 at Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore, Mysore. As a part of the workshop a mock interview was conducted to the students of Library and Information Science. The objective was to train and encourage the students to attend the interviews in their career more confidently. A mock advertisement for two posts � Assistant Librarian (General) and Assistant Librarian (Automation) � was announced on April 16, 2005 at the Department�s Notice Board. Eighteen students from MLISc final year applied, of which 15 students attended the interview. The selected candidate will be awarded a prize during the MyLISA anniversary day to be held in the near future. The actual interview took place in a �real environment�. An eminent professor of HRD from SDM-IMD Prof.K.Balakrishanan, a well-known librarian Sri. Puttannaiah and Dr. N.S. Harinarayana, faculty member of the Department of Library and Information Science conducted the interview for nearly two hours. The students were grilled about their knowledge in the subject as well as ICTs. At the end of the interview of each student, suggestions were given with a view to improve their performance in the future interviews. A very positive feedback from the students endeared that this has been a fruitful exercise. The second part of the workshop was the general feedback of the interviewers to the students. Mr. Puttannaiah summarized the proceedings of the interview. He highlighted the expectations of an Interview Committee and also stressed on preparations required which would help to improve the performance of the candidates in the interview. He suggested that normally students will be tested in the interview for their Communication Skills, General Knowledge, Domain Knowledge i.e., students comprehension about the issues and concepts in Library and Information Science, basic Knowledge about the Subjects in their Degree, depth of their understating about students area of Specialization, etc., and skills in ICTs. Prof. K. Balakrishnan who was another interviewer gave an excellent discourse on "Interview and Interviewing Skills". The talk covered both perspectives �the interviewee and the interviewer. The lecture examined typical respondent behaviour and the kinds of skills an interviewer must possess in order to be able to interpret the responses received.
