The WHO Library and Information Networks for Knowledge (LNK) provides comprehensive library services on WHO information products in print and other media. In addition, library services give access to world-wide health, medical and development information resources to WHO headquarters, regions and country offices, ministries of health and other government offices, health workers in Member States, other UN and International agencies and diplomatic missions. The WHO Library programmes help regions and developing countries achieve self-sufficiency in providing information services to the health sector.
Description of duties
Plan, manage, maintain and evaluate the WHO Library Reference and Referral Services. Develop and implement specialized training activities for WHO Offices staff. Education
Advanced university degree in library and information studies, at post-graduate level.
Specialization in health sciences librarianship is desirable.
Skills and Competencies
Proven writing and communication skills. Integrity, tact and discretion in dealing with numerous contacts. Ability to initiate, develop, manage and evaluate projects; to work independently and with a variety of cultures in different settings. Knowledge of WHO and /or the UN Library /Information systems at global, regional and national levels is desirable.
Experience
Experience in providing Library and Information Services preferably at the international level, along with experience in electronic information technology applications. Professional experience in library work for nine to fifteen years including three to five years at the international level. Practical experience should include a spec!
ialization in one functional area of library work, i.e. reference work, and general library management expertise. Knowledge of NLM classification.
Experience in developing countries, within WHO, or in other inter-governmental organizations is desirable.
Languages
Excellent knowledge of English and a good working knowledge of French. Other languages an asset.
