Sirs

I am a MLISc student and on the verge of passing out from DLIS, Kerala University. What i feel is, part time research should continue. There is some point in saying that, freshers cannot take up research projects. All librarians agree upon one thing for certain - there is sea difference between what one studies in class and what one practices. Experiance is something which  cannot be replaced with classroom lectures. Myself, when required to prepare a project proposal for a JRF fellowship felt this difficulty. And moreover research is something which should not be for personal benefit alone, it should be for the society or community atleast( i mean librarian community). A programme of research, a social science research in particular should start with identification of a 'hot' research problem, and will there be a hot problem for a fresher ?. Definitely he has to take up some problems his professional seniors prescribes. If research is for increasing and supplementing one's own knowledge and nothing beyond, ok there shouldnt be research facility for practicing librarians.

Dear Mr. Rajasekharan,

It is rediculous to say that librarians should not do research while doing
his/her job. I feel that a working librarian with sufficient experience has
better understanding of the subject and is in a position to work on a research
problem leading to PhD. On the otherhand, a fresh graduate is said to have very
little knowledge or understanding on how to do research since he/she does not
have the relevant experience or approach to problem solving.

The Kerala government must be crazy in introducing this draconian Act. I am sure
there must be some senior (cynical) library professionals behind this 'dirty'
Act, who for reason known to everyone does not want others to do research. We
should remember that when teachers can do research, the librarians also can do
research.

I am sure that everyone will agree that only working librarians can and should
do research, which does not affect his/her job. I do not understand why we
(Indians) are always 'first in doing wrong things' when the whole world looks
forward with positive ideas and thinking. Let us put an end to such
short-sighted ideas.

allow working librarians to do part time research for obtaining PhD. If any
librarian is interested, he can do research without any registration and publish
his findings in research journals, without affecting his job. When a person is
employed as a librarian, he should do justice to his job for which he is
employed. If he can do doctoral research alongwith his job, there will be
compromise either in his job or in his studies, both of which are not good at
all.

registration only for the Teachers.Till then, there were opportunites for
registration, and all on a sudden the University took such a drastic step.As a
result of this,  the working people have to either take leave for doing PhD
(Full time Research) or not doing PhD at all.
