Dear All, It is a very sad to know about the sudden demise of G Kumarappa, National Library after a brief period of illness. I had an opportunity to meet him while working with INFLIBNET, as he came to attend a meeting on developing a union catalog that time Dr T A V Murthy was the Director. While interacting with Kumarappa he was mentioned that he has helped many Kannada L*iteraturists* to explore the cultural exchange among Kannada and Bengali literature. He was linking source to many Kannadigas who are visiting Kolkata. He was well known more to the literary community. I pray almighty to rest the departed soul to rest in peace and give the courage, support and strength to his family members. I happened to come across the sad news of untimely death of G. Kumarappa of National Library, Kolkata. He was not only a head of Kannada section at the National Library, Kolkata, was well known writer. He has translated many of the works of well known authors of Bengali literature into Kannada. He was a cultural bridge between Kannada and Bengali. It was very sad. May his soul rest in peace.
Prof. Rahamat Tarikere, a well known critic in Kannada was some time back in 2010 wrote an article on G. Kumarappa in Kendasampige, online Kannada literary magazine. Excerpt of the article is given below:
ಕುಮಾರಪ್ಪ ಕೊಲ್ಕತ್ತೆಯ ನ್ಯಾಶನಲ್ ಲೈಬ್ರರಿಯ ಕನ್ನಡ ವಿಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿ. ಮೂಲತಃ ಚಿತ್ರದುರ್ಗ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಬಸಾಪುರ ಎಂಬ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯವರಾದ ಅವರು ಕಾಲುಶತಮಾನದಿಂದ ಕೊಲ್ಕತ್ತೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅವರಿಗೆ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಬಂಗಾಳ ಸಾಕಾಗಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕಕ್ಕೆ ಮರಳಿ ಬರುವ ಆಸೆಯಾಯಿತು. ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಗ್ರಂಥಾಲಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಜಿ ಹಾಕಿಕೊಂಡು ಒಂದು ಸಂದರ್ಶನಕ್ಕೆ ಮೈಸೂರಿಗೆ ಬಂದರು. ಬಂದವರು ಕನ್ನಡ ಲೇಖಕರಾದ ಪ್ರಭುಶಂಕರ ಅವರನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿಯಾದರಂತೆ. ಪ್ರಭುಶಂಕರ ಅವರು ವಿಷಯ ತಿಳಿದು `ಕುಮಾರಪ್ಪ, ನಾನು ಇಂಟರ್ ವ್ಯೂ ಕಮಿಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಇದ್ದಿದ್ದರೆ ನಿಮಗೆ ಖಂಡಿತ ಕೆಲಸ ಸಿಗದಂತೆ ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರಂತೆ. ಗಾಬರಿಯಾದ ಕುಮಾರಪ್ಪ `ಯಾಕೆ ಸಾರ್ ನಾನು ಏನಂಥ ತಪ್ಪು ಮಾಡಿದೆ?' ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಲು, `ನೋಡಿ, ನೀವು ಮರಳಿ ಬಂದುಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಬಂಗಾಳಕ್ಕೂ ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕೂ ಇರುವ ಏಕೈಕ ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ಕೊಂಡಿಯೇ ಕಳಚಿಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ. ನೀವಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವುದರಿಂದ ಎರಡೂ ಭಾಷೆಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಕೊಡುಕೊಳು ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನೀವಲ್ಲೇ ಇದ್ದು ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಬೇಕು' ಎಂದರಂತೆ. ಪ್ರಭುಶಂಕರ್ ಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಒಬ್ಬ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಆಶೋತ್ತರವನ್ನು ಮನ್ನಿಸದಿರುವ ಆಯಾಮವಿದೆ, ನಿಜ. ಆದರೆ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ಸತ್ಯವೂ ಇದೆ. ಈ ಸತ್ಯವು ಕೊಲ್ಕತ್ತೆಗೆ ಹೋದಾಗ ನನಗೆ ನಿಜವೆಂದು ತೋರಿತು.
