Context of the workshop
Quality in service and best practices are the watchwords for governments, for regulatory and policy-making bodies, for corporate sector, and for NGOs. Academic institutions and their libraries are not immune to this mandate. Users are now looking for quality in everywhere, whether it is a manufactured product or a customized service. Ideal way to look at quality is by providing hundred percent satisfaction to the information seeker. It is in this broad context that this workshop is being organized.
Objectives of the Workshop: This workshop is organized keeping in view the following specific objectives:
To sensitize the workshop participants about the need and role of quality indicators and best practices in promoting the use of academic libraries.
To create awareness of quality assurance initiatives and mechanisms of the NAAC
To identify the quality indicators and best practices to make academic library services and LIS education programmes equitable, efficient, effective, flexible, and qualitative.
To develop competence among the participants to prepare reports for quality assessment by the NAAC.
Discussion themes : The themes of discussion during the workshop would be, but not limited to, the following:
Quality indicators and best practices in terms of collection management, human resource, financial requirements, space problems, ICT integration; changing role and status of academic libraries, impact of ICTs on academic libraries, professional strategies to manage change, information literacy and lifelong learning.
Target Audience and Number of participants: It would be of immense use to library professionals working in colleges and universities, and teachers of library and information science (LIS) education. It would help them to identify quality indicators, and adopt them in their libraries/curriculua. The participants in this workshop would around 40 to 50, and the seats would be offered on first-come-first-served basis.

Fee for participation is non-refundable and is to be paid in the form of demand draft in the name of "Quality Indicators Workshop, Punjabi University, Patiala" payable at Patiala.
Accommodation would be provided in the university hostels. Rates can be negotiated by the coordinator with hotels for those desirous of staying at a hotel.
How to Reach Patiala: Patiala is well connected by road and rail. All buses coming to Patiala from Chandigarh/Delhi stop at Punjabi University, 6 km before the city. Ambala Cantt (50 km) is a major rail head for most trains destined to Amritsar and Jammu. Few of them also stop at Rajpura (20 km). Direct trains to Patiala are also available. Frequent bus service is available for Patiala from Rajpura/Ambala. The nearest airport is Chandigarh (60km).
Climate and clothing: Climate during early March is normally cold to pleasant, but participants are advised to bring woolens. Maximum temperature varies between 24-28 degrees, and minimum temperature between 8-12 degree celcius.
About the Department: The Department of Library & Information Science, Punjabi University (established in 1969) is one of the leading LIS departments today having national and international collaboration. The department successfully organized UNESCO-IFLA sponsored Information Skills for Learning, Part II International workshop in 2005 and IATLIS Conference in 2006. It offers two regular full time one year courses, Bachelor of Library & Information Science, and Master of Library & Information Science.
