Warm greetings from the National Digital Library of India (NDLI). We hope you and your family are safe and well. These are challenging times indeed.
You will be pleased to know that the NDLI has responded actively to the COVID crisis. Shortly after the nationwide lock downs began in March 2020, we launched a ‘Study at Home’ service for students of all levels; a ‘COVID-19 Research Repository’ for stakeholders seeking to develop COVID-related solutions; an ‘Examination Preparatory’ service for students preparing for their board examinations; and a massive drive to make available teacher-sourced lecture videos and new educational resources from publishers.
Each of these interventions has met with an overwhelming response, and since April the NDLI has experienced a continuing surge in document views and downloads.
We are writing to you now about a different NDLI initiative. On 30th August 2017, IIM Ahmedabad, ADINET, INFLIBNET and Informatics, Bangalore organized a session on “Copyright, Research and Libraries: the way ahead” at Vikram Sarabhai Library, IIM Ahmedabad which was attended by more than 200 librarians from all over India. Librarians opined in this session that the Copyright issues vis-à-vis libraries are in a cloudy state and a working manual would be desirable. A working group under the leadership of Late Dr Anil Kumar, the then Librarian of IIM Ahmedabad, collected and classified questions and concerns from the Librarians in the form of a structured document of questions and concerns during September to December 2017. This concept then incubated into the NDLI as an initiative to get it embedded into the NDLI process.
To take the initiative forward, NDLI in February 2018 organized a ‘National Workshop on Copyright Issues in Digital Libraries’ at IIT Kharagpur which was attended by over 100 librarians, library science professionals and copyright experts from premier Indian institutions. From the intense deliberations of the Workshop it transpired that there was an urgent interest among librarians in having a handbook that could demystify copyright issues, identify good practices, and offer practical guidelines for the copyright-related dilemmas that librarians often encounter. Thus was born the idea of developing a Copyright Guide for Indian Libraries.
A team of leading IPR experts from around India set to work on the publication. On the occasion of National Library Day 2020 (12 August), we are delighted to announce that the draft Copyright Guide for Indian Libraries is now available for public consultation.
