Dear Members It is great news to share that NCSI-Net successfully organized 5th TBR Memorial seminar on Building Institutional Repositories using Dspace on 14th November 2009 at Choksi hall, IISc, Bangalore. We are over whelmed by the kind of response got from students and budding LIS professionals. We had 92 registrations among which 73 were students and 19 young professionals from various universities and organizations. Seminar started with invocation song by Kum. Rajalaxmi, Mr. Francis Jayakanth briefed about NCSI, NCSI-Net and Objectives of the seminar. He highlighted late Dr. TBR’s passion towards teaching and educating young professional about latest developments in the field. First technical session started after coffee/tea break by Shri Francis Jayakanth with “An Overview on Institutional Repositories”, he spoke about history, issues, advantages and IR’s in Indian Scenario. Second talk was by Shri Filbert Minj on ‘Introduction to Dspace’, he highlighted various features, hardware & software requirements, etc, of Dspace, followed by Dspace Installation session by Shri Francis, Shri. Obaiah, and Shri. Arun. They showed installation of dependent software’s like JDK, PostgreSQL, Maven, Tomcat and Dspace. Second session stared after lunch. Prof. Giridhar Madras, Chairman NCSI, addressed gathering and emphasized the importance of Institutional Repositories and how LIS professional can play important role in setting up IR’s in their organizations. Prof. Giridhar Madras was felicitated on the occasion for his recent achievement (he was awarded with Shanthi Swarup Bhatnagar award by CSIR, Govt of India). Shri Obaiah demonstrated the administration and customization of Dspace. Shri Satya Ranjan Sahu presented case study of NIO where they have setup IR using Dspace. He shared their experience and challenges faced in implementing their IR, and showed the usage Statistics of NIO IR. Shri KP Raghuram delivered interesting talk on Digitization & Preservation, where he covered different technologies for digitization, various file formats, OCR and issues concerning to preservation for future usage. After the tea break there was an interesting session on career advice, objective of this session was to help the students to build their career. Panelists from different background, Shri Satya Ranjan Sahu (Government R & D), Kum. Archana and Shri Anand Byarappa (Corporate) and Shri Francis Jayakant (Academic) shared their opinions. Smt. Suvarsha Minj moderated the discussion. Shri Rajendra Babu proposed vote of thanks.
