Dear Dr. D. V. Singh Sir,
I totally agree with your views. There must be some logic behind every
action. Be it an appointment or promotion or any other thing. There are
many instances in our field where the institutes/ universities have
violated the norms set for the purpose. There is no transparency in
recruitments. We all raise our voice (on online forums only) against such
practices when they happen and forget about them after few days.
I understand that it is not possible for any one individual to continue the
fight against injustice for longer period of time considering his own
personal and workplace commitments. But, the professional bodies such as
ILA can do it. The representatives of these bodies have volunteered
themselves (while contesting elections) to work for the betterment of the
profession. But, I have not seen or heard any postings/ communications from
any ILA representative on this or any other subject concerning the
profession.
The DISCUSSIONS are good but, ONLY DISCUSSIONS are not good. Can we expect
any course of action from any professional body on this front? Can these
professional bodies also work for the things other than conducting
conferences and seminars?
The appointment of an expert from some other field to one of the top posts
in LIS is not the matter of concern; the matter of concern is the
diminishing image of the librarians in the society. We need to change this
trend.
Regards,
Anand Dodamani

The current Director Patricia Flatley Brennan holds a Masters Degree in Nursing and a PhD in industrial engineering! A previous long term Director was Dr Donald Lindberg who was a doctor - an MD in Pathology, but also taught Information Sciences. Dr SRR was a pioneer - he created the library profession.
As others have said, I agree it is not the qualification alone but their contributions to such systems as a whole. I also agree that there must be transparency in selection and everyone needs to know how and why one is selected - this applies to any major position
Just my opinion. I value differences in opinions.
