Badan,
This idea of an OSS course is good. Libraries and OSS surely gel well. But I think a course need to be more broad based - focusing first on the concepts, history of OSS. For example the difference between 'Free software' and 'Freeware' is very little understood. Plus, the pros and cons of using a software etc.
Like others mentioned in this forum, the tools would keep changing over time. So the training should focus on how a librarian is able to cope with changes over time and take the right decisions according to the needs of an institution he/she is serving.
Before going over installations of specific library software, it would be a good idea to give short intoductions to other OSS on which these software are dependend - like OS, RDBMS and scripting langugages. Though not at the level comptuter science professionals learn it, I think a modern librarian who wants to apply IT to provide services should at least have an idea of these.
Of course, practicals could cover the installations and customization of a few software of each type.
Covering all these areas, I think would be a wholesome course.
Thanks and regards,

Subject: [LIS-Forum] Fwd: Post Graduate Diploma in Application of Open Source Software in Library (PGDAOSSL) To: "POSTING MESSAGES TO LIS-FORUM" Date: Friday, July 10, 2009, 5:30 AM Sir,You are very right that the librarians will use only a particular software package from each category. But they need to be trained at lest two or three from each category.. It will gives you two way benefit. a) Firstly, the implementer can choose or they have choices to choose at least from two or three.b) If the growth and development of a particular software stops (in case of OSS it is very frequent) they can shift over to others..
We have a plan to change our syllabus in every three years.. we have to cope with the subjects not to be tried to escape from it.. This course will be both for librarians and teachers of LIS.
Lastly, I am always inspiring from your comments.. it gives a new wing to my thought.. thanks a lot. i wnt to express my doubts abt this course. do u wnt to make librarians or teachers? if it is teacher he may be interested to know many software, so tht he can teach. but a librarian applies only one software for automation or one software for digital library and so on. the use of such software can be learnt in 2 weeks. then wht the librarians will do by learning use of many softwares. these softwares do get updated, and without using is it possible to keep track of updates?
newer and newer sofwares are coming at fast rate? hw long u will update ur syllabus. there are problems with OSS too. In India we donot hav usergroups to sort out the problems,. we have seen till today professional frnds do not know wht is CDS/ISIS, and they think it is Library management software? many schools teach the same till now. we need to replace the CDS/ISIS with one of the best OSS and make the student a master so tht he can use it and also keep track of the developments.
i think tht this program is not advisable, ad i am surprised with the idea. there are many library professionals at every corner of this country, who can teach KOHA, D Space, Green stone etc. butmake the program much more useful and let the students do not get taken for a ride.
all the best for the [proposed program with best wishes

Dear Shri Badan Barman,
There are LIS professionals like Dr ARD Prasad from DRTC and NCSI, IISc, Bangalore faculties will guide you on OSS. Dr Shalini Urs from Mysore University, Shri Shashi Nath from DMRL (DRDO) are also experts in this field. You may directly contact them.
But I am wondering how the course will be conducted without any faculties having knowledge in this field since you are also new to the filed. I do not think so every time the experts will be called for conducting the classes. As of my knowledge both NCSI and DRTC are teaching these same syllabus in their courses.
More inputs may expects from the professionals. Regards,
