Dear Sir, Eprints or DSpace would be suitable for handling the kind of content you mentioned. I would recommend EPrints because it is a lightweight DL software in terms of computer resources and dependency on the associated software components.
Wrt to the metadata fields, EPrints software, by default, should support all the desired fields to handle the nature of the content you have mentioned. One can continually fine-tune the metadata fields to eliminate irrelevant fields and add new fields as desired. You will get clarity on the metadata fields once you create a repository and add some sample records.
With regards, Francis.

Dear Colleagues,
Correspondence of the great personalities is of significant value to
researchers in the field of History. I have been asked to suggest the
metadata fields for cataloging such content. While I am listing essentials
based on my understanding, I thought to seek information from experienced
professionals. Also, I will be very much thankful for a discussion on
whether the open access repository software such as DSpace/eprints would
suit this kind of content or if something else is available in open source
to make it publicly available.
Thanks in advance for your input.
Regards, - Tapaswi
