SEMINAR-4

Record to Data: An evolving scenario of Bibliographic information.

Abstract

Library record has been designed to be read and interpreted by the
librarians and users. The rich record management is one of the forte of
librarianship and in today's web environment, these bibliographic records
can be an asset in making the web smarter. Librarians have achieved in
making records machine readable and facilitate the exchange of records
within the community, but there is a gap to enable the machine to manage
and interpret these records so as to integrate into applications to
provide information services on the Internet. Unless we call upon these
changing course, libraries are bound to fall out. Therefore, it has
become imperative to revamp or reconstruct in the light of semantic web
so that Libraries remain relevant. Changes are seen in the services that
libraries provide, the content and the information that is created and
disseminated by making data in library silos visible on the web, so as to
achieve rich user experience in the information ecosystem.

In this seminar, the importance of Bibliographic Record shall be
discussed, in relation to, changing scenario of the web and the
evolutionary activity towards Bibliographic information. The different
models, the framework that is being developed, the working groups,
projects based on this advancement and the open challenges, shall be a
part of the discussion.
