Abstract:

Curatorship and Librarianship are the two age old professions and have shouldered the responsibility of preserving the ancient knowledge embedded in art, language, literature, architecture and culture of human heritage for the centuries. The knowledge of curatorship is highly skilled and has many specialisations like, Epigraphy, Archival Management, Preservation and conservation, manuscriptoloty and museology etc. It has evolved its own methods and techniques of preserving archives, handwritten books and palm leaf manuscripts and so on.
Digital technology has opened a new avenue in preservation of archives, and art and architectural monuments and structures. Digital Curation is the new version of preservation objective with the use of digital preservation technology. The developments in computer and communication technology and of reasonable costs, ensured longevity of the documents in particular, and providing global access to representative reproduction of these documents and monuments the digital curation technology has come into use worldwide. The speaker demonstrates them with some examples from India/Karnataka and employs a new domain termed as Historical informatics.


About Speaker:

Prof. A.Y.Asundi, Former Professor and Chairman, Department of Library and Information Science, and also served as the Officer in charge of IT Centre of Bangalore University, Bangalore. With experience as practicing librarian, and a teacher he has been serving the profession nearly for 5 decades. His vast experience has a blend of both traditional and modern areas of LIS and has almost touched upon teaching any area of LIS. He has also been Guest Faculty for teaching, MCA, MBA courses in various institutions in Karnataka and also for more than two decades at DRTC/ISI. He has been a member of several LIS committees in India and Abroad, He is a member of the Advisory Panel of IFLA SIG on LIS Education in Developing Countries. He is one of the editors of the IFLA Publication “ LIS Education in Developing Countries – The Road Ahead (IFLA Publication  165) published in 2014. He has visited Denmark, Norway, England, USA, Singapore on professional assignments, participated in ETD-2010 held at University of Texas, Austin.
