Prof. Timothy Gowers is a celebrated mathematician. A professor at the
University of Cambridge, UK, he is a Fellow of the Royal Society and a
Fields Medalist. In the midst of his research and teaching he finds time to
make scientific research freely accessible. Not only did he, through the
PolyMath project, give an opportunity for interested common citizens to
take part in solving high level research questions, but he also initiated
the Cost of Knowledge (aka Boycott Elsevier) movement. He is a great
champion of freeing access to knowledge from the stranglehold of commercial
interests.

He maintains a blog. Here is an entry he contributed six months ago.

Best wishes.
