Linked Data: A descendant to Library Science Principles

Abstract

In present scenario of Semantic web, goal is to enhance the visibility of resources; and publish it in a structured manner, so that not only humans but also computers become capable of processing it. Linked data is just an addition of one more facet to it, so that the resources could be interlinked and related concepts can be identified and discovered. However, the underlying idea is very old and is closely related to concepts like citations between scholarly articles and controlled headings in library catalogues. Thus as Library & Information Science professionals, we should utilize and implement our traditional principles with suitable improvisations so as to upgrade availability and accessibility of bibliographic data that are enclosed in four walls of Libraries to users in world wide web environment. In this colloquium, we would be discussing the basic technologies behind the Linked Data and its working principles, highlighting some of its implementations and finally co
ncluding with its need in general and in Libraries.
