Children dressed as legendary personalities read verses at Library Day

Schoolchildren dressed up as famous literary personalities from the State
and conveyed their greetings to librarians in the city, as part of the
National Librarians Day celebrations held at the district central library
here on Monday.

National Librarians Day is observed every year in India on August 12 to
mark the birthday of S.R. Ranganathan considered to be the father of
library science and information science in the country.

Schoolchildren belonging to classes 1 to 8, from different panchayat union
elementary and middle schools in villages of Kosampatti, Mullikarambur,
Kodiyalam, Kuzhumani, and Bharatiyar School of Nandanallur block,
participated in the event.

With their teachers’ help, the children dressed up to resemble Avaiyyar,
Bharat Mata, Swami Vivekananda, Bharatidasan, Thiruvalluvar, Kambar,
Subramanya Bharati, Agasthiyar, and Illangovadigar. They then recited
verses and conveyed their wishes to the librarians present and interacted
with the patrons of the library.

On the orders of Assistant Elementary Educational Officer Evelyn Janet, the
event was organised by S. Jayaraman, teacher of Bharatiyar School.

“The event was organised with an aim to create awareness among students and
other sections of society on the importance of reading books and to
encourage them to make use of the library,” said District Library Officer
A.P. Sivakumar. President of the readers’ forum of the library V.
Govindasamy and vice-president V. Balasubramaniyan were present.

According to Mr. Sivakumar, the library organises a storytelling programme
for children every fourth Sunday and a book discussion and review event
every second Sunday.
