INTRODUCTION
Present day institutions, libraries and information centres are
extensively using the Information technology for information
management. As part of storage and access of digital assets and
information, these are developing digital libraries, e-repositories,
ETD repositories, LOR, Courseware Portals, and Gateways etc. Besides
Open Source Software have gained rapid momentum world over due to
economic and technical sustainability to develop and maintain these
initiatives for wider dissemination and preservation of e-content.
Dspace is most popular Open source software jointly developed by MIT
Libraries and HP labs for digital asset management. It helps to create,
index, retrieve various forms of digital content besides being
adaptable to different community needs, Interoperable among various
systems and adhering to international standards.
Given the significance of the software the workshop is aimed to
sensitize and encourage the LIS Professionals to build digital
libraries and repositories. The thrust is to provide practical training
to the participants in building digital library collections and
deliberate over issues of allied areas.It will also facilitate
interaction between experts and participants to bridge the knowledge
gap and initiate capacity building activities. The deliberations of the
experts during the workshop will help to develop a road map for the
digitization and organisation of scholarly publications, theses and
courseware etc in the country.

OBJECTIVES
The workshop will offer a platform to all stakeholders to enable them
to discuss and debate the current and emerging technologies for
providing better and effective services. The
major objectives are:
1.Provide an overview of the open Source   Software and allied areas.
2.To train in installation, Customisation and upgradation of Digital
repositories.
3.Build Institutional and subject   Repositories in different
institutions using Dspace encompassing different digital assets.

METHODOLOGY
  The pedagogy will rely mainly on:
1	Lectures
2	Demonstration
3      Hands on Practice

RESOURCE PERSONS
   Resource Persons/experts will be drawn from
   INFLIBNET, NISCAIR, Directorate of IT&SS, Department of Computer
Sciences and  Department of Library & Information Science
    University of Kashmir.

PARTICIPANTS
The programme is open to Scholars, researchers, librarians, information
managers, information scientists, museum managers and archive
institutions etc having basic knowledge of computers and aptitude for
open source software and Digital Libraries. The Participants are
limited to 40.

VENUE
Department of Library & Information Science
University of Kashmir, Hazratbal Srinagar 190006.
The department has two computer labs with 40 computer systems with high
speed internet access and state of art technology. Besides the
department has developed Digital Repository (KNoor) which is accessible
at http://dspace.uok.edu.in:8080/dspace/for uploading e-contents of
three premier institutes of J & K using Dspace.

DURATION: 5 Days
(28th June – 2nd July, 2010)

REGISTRATION:  Participants can apply on the enclosed Proforma along
with Registration fee of Rs 2500.00 in the form of Cheque/draft drawn
in favour of Head, Department of Library & Information Science,
University of Kashmir.
