With the University Grants Commission (UGC) issuing a new circular
relating to PhDs, some universities like the Calcutta and Burdwan
universities have stopped registering new students for the doctorate
courses. But others like Jadavpur University said that there was no
need to panic as the universities will switch to the new rules laid
down by the UGC.
“We would advise the students to register as per the new rules. There
is no need to stall registration,” said Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur
University, Pradip Narayan Ghosh.

According to Ghosh, the decision on this issue will be taken in the
next executive council meeting of the university.

A few universities are talking about a smooth switchover to the new
proposal of the UGC. The UGC has suggested that a university-specific
entrance test be held along with stringent checking of thesis and
occasional internal examinations.
