WORKSHOP ON NEWGENLIB

About NewGenLib

NewGenLib (www.newgenlib.com), a web-based integrated library management system (ILMS) was recently made open source under the GNU General Public Licensing (GPL). In the three months since it became open source software (OSS), there have been 6000+ downloads of the software worldwide. NewGenLib is predicated on using international metadata and interoperability standards and web protocols. The two agencies involved in the development of the software: Kesavan Institute of Information and Knowledge Management (KIIKM) (www.kiikm.org) and Verus Solutions Pvt. Ltd., (VSPL) envision the spread of NewGenLib and other open source solutions in libraries in the country and region via advocacy, workshops and services to libraries. The NewGenLib Foundation has been formed to further the use of open source technologies, NewGenLib and also to contribute to its continued enhancement.

Workshop Objectives and Content

1. Paradigms of the open source movement and the pros and cons of OSS
2. Technology and architecture of NewGenLib
3. Metadata and inter-operability standards on which NewGenLib in predicated and hands-on exercises on using these.
4. Hands-on installation of the server-and client-side software on Windows and Linux OS
5. Database development (including multilingual data entry) with NewGenLib using direct import and the Z39-50 protocol from web sources of MARC-21 metadata.
6. The development of open access repositories compliant with OAI-PMH via NewGenLib
7. Serials management in NewGenLib and use of standards for display and the MARC-21 holdings format
8. The NewGenLib Desktop Application and the End-of-day Process application 
9. Free and paid technical support services that open source users can expect Target Audience for the Workshop LIS professionals with basic working knowledge of IT and IT professionals interested in ILMS and current/potential users of NewGenLib. The Workshop will be limited to 40 participants on a 'first-come-first-served' basis.

Workshop Fee

Those interested may register on or before 1st June 2008 on payment of Rs. 4,000/- by DD drawn favouring Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science. 
The fee will cover the cost of workshop kit comprising the Installation CD, multimedia tutorials and papers, hard copy user manual; lunch and tea.
The duly filled-in Registration Form with the payment should be forwarded to the Executive Officer, Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science, 702, 42nd Cross, III Block, Rajajinagar, Bangalore 560 010 on or before 1st June 2008.
