Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore
celebrated the 114th birth anniversary of Dr. S R Ranganathan by welcoming
the new batch of students (2006-08). The program started with the lighting
the lamp by the faculty members of the department. On this occasion
Prof.Shalini Urs gave speech on Dr.S R Ranganathan and his seminal works
in the field of Library and Information Science.Prof. Shalini Urs
highlighted the Ranganathans Mnemonic value and how it helps us to
introspect and retrospect to move ourselves forward. She explained that
how Ranganthan incidently got into the bandwagon of Librarianship and his
contribution to put India in a global map in the field of Library and
Information science in the early 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.She spoke about
the relevance of Ranganathans Faceted Approach in todays world of
Semantic Web. Dr. N S Harinarayana spoke about the Ranganathans
successful journey as a Library professional, his vast knowledge
on Indian Philosophy. He recited the Five Laws of Library Scienceand the sequence of arrangement and significance of the 24 words of five laws. Dr. Kaisher Nikam described the life and achievements of Ranganathan and his interest in Philosophy-Logic-Science-Mythology.She expressed the delight and the fortune of her association with M A Gopinath and Neelamegahan, who had the opportunity to work with Dr. S R Ranganathan closely. Dr M Chendrashakera explained the importance of Chain indexing and Book Selection techniques of Ranganathan in todays world of Information explosion. Dr. Mallinath Kumbar Chairman of the department presided over the program.
Ashwini and Nagashayana of third semester gave brief talk on Chronological
events of Ranganathans Life and achievements and on Colon Classification
