Abstracts:
"S.R. Ranganathan, Andrew Carnegie, and Open Access"

Open Access Initiatives represent a new business model for
publishing that is challenging commercial scholarly publishing.
The question is, must it be an either-or situation, or can the
two models thrive side by side -- and indeed support one another?

"Open Access Publishing: The view from the trenches at Caltech"

Caltech embarked on its Open Archives initiative, called Collection
of Open Digital Archives (CODA), in January 2000. Since then, we
have collected an institutional repository of over 4100 items.
Just about half of these are Caltech doctoral theses. Other documents
include: books, technical reports, preprints, reprints, oral histories,
and popularizing scientific articles. High usage statistics quickly
propelled CODA from a pilot study into a major strategic initiative of
the Caltech library. In this talk, I will cover some of the challenges
of this project, as well as our plans for the future.
