Subject: [ERIL-L] PubMed Central backfile project

PubMed Central (PMC) has initiated a major archival scanning project in
conjunction with several participating publishers
<http://pubmedcentral.com/about/scanning.html>. NLM is committed to
providing cover-to-cover images of the journal issues, back through volume 1
of all participating titles.

American Society for Microbiology (10 journals) and BMJ Publishing Group
(BMJ and specialist journals; 21 titles) are the two largest publisher
blocs.

PNAS backfiles will apparently be created independently from the versions in
JSTOR. PNAS is already the most heavily used title by Caltech from PMC, by
more than an order of magnitude. With an additional 75 years of backfile
becoming available, unfettered by IP-ranges or usernames & passwords, many
grad students and faculty, working at home or on the road, will find PNAS
via PMC to be an indispensable adjunct to their research.
